The Audi Q7 is one practical and comfortable three-row German SUV. However, the game has been upped by the luxurious Mercedes-Benz GLS and the BMW X7, both of which sit above the Q7. Audi will soon have an answer to these upmarket offerings with the Q9, its upcoming flagship 7-seater luxury SUV that has been spotted testing in its early stages.
Reports suggest the Q9 will be based on the Q7’s MLB EVO platform and at first glance, the Q9 looks B-I-G! In fact, it should be over five metres in length with the distance between the axles possibly measuring around three metres. So, space shouldn’t be an issue for all seven occupants.
The enormous size means it should have no difficulty in attracting the spotlight. We could also see some familiar Audi elements, such as the large single-frame grille and split LED tail lamps. The large alloy wheels and the butch body cladding further emphasise the SUV quotient. We are yet to see the cabin, but because this is Audi’s flagship SUV, we expect it to be luxurious, similar to the Q8.
Considering the Q9 is in the early stages of development, the powertrain information is yet to be revealed but we reckon it could be offered with petrol and diesel engines. A hybrid powertrain can’t be ruled out either with Audi pushing for electrification. Read about it here.
Audi is expected to take the wraps off the Audi Q9 either later this year or by early-2022. It’s too early to say if it will come to India or not, but considering the GLS and X7 are popular sellers, the Q9 may join the party in 2022 or 2023.
