Tata Motors has finally launched its latest flagship model, the Safari, at prices ranging from Rs 14.69 lakh to Rs 21.45 lakh (ex-showroom). Essentially a third-row derivative of the Harrier, the Safari comes in six variants, viz, XE, XM, XT, XT+, XZ, and XZ+. It gets 6-seater and 7-seater layouts, and is powered by a diesel engine. Despite borrowing heavily from the Harrier, the Safari gets some distinguishing elements.

All variants of the Safari garner a premium ranging from Rs 70,000 to Rs 1.35 lakh over the corresponding Harrier variants. While the 7-seater layout is offered in all variants, the 6-seater option is limited to the top-spec XZ+ only.

Up front, the Safari looks similar to the Harrier, but there are subtle tweaks like a tri-arrow grille and silver skid plate. The sides are where the real differences are -- larger 18-inch wheels, a stepped roof (for non-sunroof variants), and an upright tailgate thanks to the addition of the third row. That’s also why the Safari is 80mm taller than the Harrier. There’s also a Safari Adventure Edition that sports a tropical green color scheme, a dual-tone black-and-light-brown interior upholstery theme, blacked-out wheels, and chrome elements in matte black/gunmetal grey.

A new black-white colour scheme aside, the Safari’s dashboard layout is similar to that of the Harrier. It is in the second row that you spot the differences. The Safari comes in both six-seater and seven-seater layouts. Third-row occupants get separate AC units and two USB charging ports. Also, there’s 73 litres of boot space now with all the rows up, thanks to that third row.

There are a few additional features over those of the Harrier, including electronic parking brake with auto hold, tyre pressure monitoring, rear disc brakes, ambient lighting, and i-RA connected car technology. The Safari retains features like the 8.8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch semi-digital driver’s display,  panoramic sunroof, and powered driver’s seat. Safety kit consists of six airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors with camera, and electronic stability control.

Under the hood, the Safari is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine pushing out 170PS and 350Nm. The motor can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. As of now, it only gets front-wheel drive, but the carmaker could introduce AWD later, depending on the demand.

The Safari is available in four colour options: Royale Blue, Daytona Grey, Tropical Mist and Orcus White. Its rivals include the MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV500.
