The upcoming 2020 Mahindra Thar is one of the most anticipated SUVs of recent times. Mahindra has been extensively testing the SUV all throughout India since some time now. The carmaker was supposed to debut the Thar at Auto Expo 2020, but now we’ve got confirmation that the 2020 Thar will finally debut in India during the second quarter of FY 2020-2021. Going by this and our previous speculation, it is safe to expect a launch by June 2020.
The SUV is now based on a new platform which also gives it a butch appeal. From the numerous spy shots, we can make out that the Thar has grown in size and is now sporting a premium cabin. The SUV is not rudimentary anymore as we’ve spotted a well laid out cabin with comforts such as a touchscreen infotainment system, steering-mounted audio controls, climate control, and a multi-info display. Expected safety features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.
Under the hood will be two BS6-compliant engines. The diesel is expected to be a 2.0-litre unit good enough for 140PS of power and 320Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the petrol engine will likely be the new 2.0-litre mStallion unit developing around 190PS and 380Nm. These engines are expected to be paired with a 6-speed manual while an automatic gearbox is also on the cards. Being a serious mud plugger, expect it to feature a host of off-road goodies including a low-range transfer case.
With changes so drastic and considering the huge array of equipment on offer, it is safe to expect a substantial premium for the 2020 Mahindra Thar. The current version is priced from Rs 9.59 lakh to Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Key rivals include the Force Gurkha and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
