The Thai-spec City sports a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that makes 122PS

  • The 2020 Honda City is the fifth generation of the sedan.
  • A turbo engine and CVT gearbox will be the only powertrain option in Thailand.
  • BS6-compliant 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines expected in India.
  • The 2020 City is longer and wider than before and sits 10mm lower.
  • Prices in Thailand start from THB 579,500 (Rs 13.74 lakh).

Honda has unveiled the 2020 Honda City in Thailand. It is the fifth generation of the sedan and the seventh including the early kei car hatchbacks. The newest City features an all-new exterior and interior design and sits lower, longer, and wider than before. The Thai-spec model is powered by a 122PS 1.0-litre turbocharged VTEC petrol engine mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). It is priced between THB 579,500 to 739,000 (Rs 13.74 to 17.52 lakh).

We expect the all-new City to come to India in mid-late 2020. The BS6-compliant fourth-generation City has reached dealerships. It will retain the 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines; these motors are likely to power the 2020 City in India, as well.

The Thai-spec City is available in four trim levels: S, V, SV, and RS. It sits 10mm lower, 53mm wider and 113mm longer than before. While the ‘Ignite Red’ colour is reserved for RS-spec models, the City can be had in five other colours: Platinum White Pearl (RS and SV only), Crystal Black Pearl, Lunar Silver Metallic, Modern Steel Metallic, and Taffeta White (S and V only).

All variants of the Thai-spec 2020 Honda City are powered by the same 3-cylinder, 1.0-litre VTEC turbo engine which makes 122PS and 173Nm. Honda claims that the new City has a fuel consumption of 23.8kmpl. The only transmission on offer is a CVT with 7 simulated steps controlled by a paddle shifter. The new engine is Euro 5-compliant with a CO2 emission of 99g/km. It can also run on the ethanol-petrol mix of E20. Given that Honda’s 1.5-litre engine will soon be upgraded to BS6, that’s the engine we expect to power the India-spec 2020 City. But the company states, “The new engine provides driving performance superior to the 1.5-liter engine in the previous generation.”

The 2020 City will be on display at the 36th Thailand International Motor Expo 2019 from November 29 to December 10 and will go on sale there starting December 24. Prices for each variant start from THB 579,500 (Rs 13.74 lakh) for the S model, THB 609,000 (Rs 14.44 lakh) for V, THB 665,000 (Rs 665,000) for SV, and THB 739,000 (17.52 lakh) for the RS. Honda Thailand has said that people who book the new City by the end of this year will be able to take delivery of the car by the end of January 2020.

We expect the car to be unveiled in India sometime in mid-2020 since Honda will not be present at the Auto Expo 2020. While the current-gen City is priced between Rs 9.81 lakh to 14.61 lakh, expect the 2020 model to be priced higher.
