Nissan India has been hush about new product launches following the Magnite subcompact SUV in December 2020, until now. Today, the carmaker has showcased not one, but three new SUVs from its global lineup: the Juke (a Creta rival), the Qashqai (Compass rival), and the X-Trail (Fortuner rival).
Let’s hold our horses though as the Qashqai and X-Trail are being brought to India for assessment first. Post evaluation, the full-size SUV will be the first to be launched on our shores. Meanwhile, the Juke is here on display purposes for now. Nissan says the tests are to prove if these vehicles can adapt to our conditions and meet customer expectations. All three cars feature a strong hybrid powertrain option, giving it an upper hand in their respective segment.
The fourth-generation X-Trail will be the first model to go on sale in India after it completes testing in the country. The new-gen model boasts modern styling touches and a minimalistically styled cabin with plenty of upmarket features. But the highlight, though, is what’s underneath the hood as you get the choice of a conventional 163PS 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine or a strong hybrid powertrain putting out 204PS (front-wheel drive) and 213PS (four-wheel drive).
Now, Nissan hasn’t said when it plans to bring the Qashqai to India, but it could be on the cards for sure if it successfully passes its testing here. The Qashqai is a midsize SUV that locks horns with models like the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson and Tata Harrier.
The Nissan Juke showcase is purely for display purposes as of now. It’s a compact SUV that will lock horns with stalwarts like Hyundai Creta and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara if brought to the country. First things first, the Juke with its rounded lines and sharp creases does look quirky and unique when compared to its rivals. Once again, like the Grand Vitara, the Juke’s focus is the strong hybrid powertrain being showcased in India and it combines a 94PS 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 49PS electric motor.
Nissan is yet to give an exact timeline to launch these cars in our market. However, they’ll be initially brought to India as completely built units placing them on the pricier side when compared to its rivals. That said, the localised tests are also a study to see how much these cars can be localised in India for manufacturing and possibly, exports as well.
