The off-roading SUV retains the aesthetics and the DNA of the three-door model that made it so desirable

The Maruti Jimny five-door made its first global appearance at Auto Expo 2023 as a longer (only by a bit though) and more practical version of the three-door SUV sold overseas. But, the changes aren’t limited to its longer wheelbase and the two additional doors. If you live close to the national capital region, you can check it out in person at the expo until January 18.

Here’s a look at the Jimny SUV in ten images:

From the front, the Jimny five-door looks pretty much identical to the three-door SUV. It has the same cutesy, retro front end, but gets chrome trim elements on the grille.

In the profile, the aesthetics and compact footprint of the Jimny are intact, even in the five-door model. The boxy SUV is under four metres long, which should make it easy to park and manoeuvre in congested cities, and looks remarkably similar to the three-door SUV with its short overhang and unchanged rear end.

Maruti Jimny Interior

The retro theme is even more prominent inside the Jimny, with its analogue, ‘90s-inpired, instrument cluster and old school button layout. It even has a grab rail for the front passenger!

That said, the SUV is well-equipped with a nine-inch touchscreen, automatic climate control, cruise control, keyless entry and push button start, power windows and cruise control.

The safety kit includes six airbags, ISOFIX child-seat mounts, stability control, hill-hold assist and reversing camera as standard.

The Jimny is a proper off-roader with Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4x4 system and other hardware to tackle the rough stuff. It has rigid axles and leaf spring suspension front and rear, alongside features such as hill descent control and brake-based limited-slip differential for off-roading.

It’s powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine good for 105PS and 134Nm torque, paired with a standard five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.

The Maruti Jimny is a cutesy little off-road SUV that blends practicality and 4x4 capability in the same, diminutive package. It’s available to book right now, and will rival the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha once launched.
