Carmakers are now focusing on safety and affordability, as offering six airbags has become both a strong selling point and a key consideration for buyers. While regulations currently mandate only dual front airbags, many brands are voluntarily upgrading their lineups to include six airbags as standard. On that note, let’s explore the top five most budget-friendly cars in India that come equipped with six airbags as standard.
Price: Rs 4.23 lakh to Rs 6.21 lakh (ex-showroom)
The Alto nameplate has been among the top sellers from Maruti, and considering its popularity, being equipped with six airbags as standard is always a plus. This safety upgrade turns out to be a great advantage for hatchback buyers on a strict budget. Along with that, the Alto K10 also gets other safety equipment like ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, three-point seatbelts for all passengers, and reverse parking sensors.
Price: Rs 5.44 lakh to Rs 6.70 lakh (ex-showroom)
Maruti’s entry-level people mover, the Eeco, recently received a safety upgrade with six airbags as standard. This makes it the most affordable three-row minivan to offer six airbags as standard. It has also been updated in terms of seating, and is now offered with a 6-seater layout, along with a 5-seater option.
Maruti also sells the Eeco for commercial use, including as an ambulance. Other safety equipment include, rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD, and 3-point seatbelts for all passengers.
Price: 5.64 lakh to Rs 7.37 lakh (ex-showroom)
In early February of this year, Maruti hiked the prices of the Celerio by up to Rs 32,500, but it also received a crucial safety upgrade, making six airbags as standard. Along with that, the Celerio now also comes equipped with 3-point seatbelts for all passengers. Previously, it only offered dual front airbags, along with ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and parking sensors, which have been carried forward. Priced from under Rs 6 lakh, the Celerio takes on the likes of the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Tata Tiago, and Maruti Wagon R.
Rs: 5.65 lakh to Rs 7.48 lakh (ex-showroom)
Along with the Eeco, Maruti also upgraded the Wagon R’s safety with six airbags as standard. Additionally, you now also get 3-point seatbelts for all passengers with the Wagon R. Features such as ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and a reverse parking camera with parking sensors have been carried forward. With this upgrade, the Wagon R now becomes more appealing, further strengthening its position as one of the brand’s best-sellers.
Price: Rs 5.98 lakh to Rs 8.62 lakh (ex-showroom)
Right from its base Era variant, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios comes equipped with 6 airbags. Other safety features include ABS with EBD, a reverse parking camera with sensors, and 3-point seatbelts for all occupants. With its higher-spec variants, you also get safety tech like a tyre pressure monitoring system, along with ISOFIX child seat mounts. In terms of powertrain, you get a single choice of an 83 PS 1.2-litre petrol engine, which you can further configure with a factory-fitted CNG kit.
With the safety upgrade of offering six airbags as standard becoming the new norm for brands to attract car buyers, consumers may feel a bit more at ease about their safety. However, there are still multiple factors that need to be considered while buying a car. That being said, which of the above-mentioned budget-friendly options offering six airbags as standard appeals to you the most? Let us know in the comments.
