The touring variant for the BMW M5 will make a comeback – after over a decade – in 2024

There aren’t a lot of instances where the whole automotive industry aligns and agrees on something unanimously. The BMW M3 Touring was something everyone yearned for, so BMW delivered, and how! And now, following the positive response it received for the M3 Touring, the German carmaker will bring back the estate body style to the M5 after nearly a decade, as confirmed by a teaser.

We knew that the new-gen BMW M5 is currently under development, and if the changes on the M3 Touring are anything to go by, you can expect a similar treatment for the M5 Touring as well. The heavily camouflaged test mule reveals a muscular design, while the obvious changes are visible in its roofline, which gets an integrated spoiler as well as flared wheel arches to accomodate the wider tracks.

The quad circular exhaust tips are housed on what looks like a massive diffuser on a suitably massive and rather aggressive rear bumper. So effectively, it’ll blend the same design elements of the upcoming new M5 sedan with the silhouette of an estate wagon – arguably one of the most desired body styles in the automotive realm.

It is likely to get the same powertrain as the new BMW M5. Although the exact details of the estate M5 are still unknown, but going by the Head of Development at BMW M GmbH, Dirk Häcker’s statement - "We are now also installing a hybrid drive system with typical M performance in other high-performance cars" - it could get a turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 paired with some sort of electrification, similar to the XM super-SUV. Expect power figures to be north of 600PS.

BMW will flag off the real-world testing protocols in the next few days, so expect paparazzi to have a gala time and fresh spy shots to start surfacing soon. BMW may unveil the M5 Touring sometime in 2024, probably alongside or sometime after the debut of the new M5. It’ll be the perfect rival to the Audi RS6 Avant, the upcoming Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate and Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo.
