Volkswagen T-ROC Unveiled At Frankfurt Motor Show 2017

The theme for this year’s Frankfurt motor show is electric and autonomous vehicle concepts, but make no mistake, the car you see here is the real deal and the Volkswagen T-ROC is hitting a lot of the right notes. Based on the MQB platform, the T-ROC is VW’s baby SUV and while there are hints of Tiguan in the design, there’s enough to make it look distinct.

For starters, it is the German manufacturer’s first car to feature dual tone exteriors.The front of the car features double barrel headlights with a hexagonal grill in the centre. The LED DRLs look unconventional as they wrap around the non-functional air intakes in the bumper. The car sits on large low profile tyres under the bulging wheel arches, giving the car a muscular look. Overall, it’s more crossover than pure SUV, much like the Renault Captur or Nissan Juke.

Inside, the car takes cues from the smaller Polo hatchback. It looks vibrant and features extensive use of body coloured inserts all around the cabin. Evidently, VW’s trying to cater to a younger audience. It also gets a new all-digital instrument cluster which is connected to the infotainment system. This allows users to swipe information from the infotainment system to the driver’s display, enabling better visibility. The 5-seater is plenty functional too, with a boot capacity of 445 litres and 60:40 split folding rear seats that can be lowered to get 1290 litres of storage space.

The safety package includes something for everyone, including the people who aren’t in the car! Life saving gizmos include Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, active lane keeping, Lane Assist and the Front Assist area monitoring system with Pedestrian Monitoring and City Emergency Braking. There’s also adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera and a blind spot monitor.

The T-ROC will be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options, both featuring front-wheel drive and 6-speed manual gearboxes as standard. All-wheel drive and 6/7-speed DSG automatics will be available too.

It will hit the European markets in November and its arrival in the Indian market is expected to be announced in 2018.
