Small Capacity MV Agustas Arriving In 2021

Following in the footsteps of Harley-Davidson, MV Agusta has joined hands with Chinese motorcycle manufacturer Loncin Motor Company to build small capacity motorcycles. While the cubic capacity is still to be decided, MV has confirmed that these motorcycles will bear a displacement in the 350-500cc range. There will be four motorcycles to arrive from this series, which we figure will consist of a supersport (F1 or F2?), a naked (Brutale 400?), an adventure tourer (Turismo Veloce 400) and perhaps a neo-retro naked like the Dragster.

These four bikes will be designed by MV Agusta at its Castiglioni Research Centre in Italy. The focus is to get younger and less-experienced bikers hooked on to the folklore of MV Agusta and provide them a perfect starting point for their love affair with the brand. These bikes will be made at Loncin’s plant in Chongqing, China.

In return, MV Agusta will help Loncin get into the premium motorcycle segment. Loncin has its own sub-brand called Voge which deals with larger capacity motorcycles. Currently, the only large capacity bike that Loncin sells is a 650cc naked which has an engine from the BMW G 650 GS. To begin with, Loncin will make use of Agusta’s 800cc platform to build its next big bike.

The plan is to make these motorcycles available at all MV Agusta dealerships by the end of 2021. Which means the Italian-Chinese alliance has nearly two years to properly develop not just the new engine but the whole motorcycle(s). We could see them in prototype form at the 2020 EICMA, with a production-ready version the following year. While we expect these to land in India by 2022, we don’t know whether they will come through Loncin or via MotoRoyale, their Indian partner.

Either way, we are extremely excited at the thought of an MV Agusta rival for the likes of the KTM 390 Duke. Imagine a Brutale 400! Parallel-twin motor, power rating upwards of 45PS, pure hooligan? It will be a premium proposition and could be sport a price tag of around Rs 4 lakh. Any takers?
