It has been long, very long. But we finally have a date, for a date with the Octavia RS.

Skoda Octavia RS

August 30, 2017, is the date when India will again get its hands on an authentic budget performance sedan - the Skoda Octavia RS. It has taken its sweet time to make a comeback, about six years since the last one arrived wearing the Laura badge. From then, a lot of things have changed and the sedan is now a lot more powerful. Bookings for the sedan are underway for a token amount of Rs 1 lakh. If you are worried about the price being too high, there is some relief as the Octavia RS will be a CKD and not a CBU, saving you some bucks. Expect a price of around Rs 23 lakh.

Powering this sedan will be a 2.0-litre gasoline burner which will be sending 230PS of power and 350Nm of max torque to the front wheels. Though it is not the flagship RS 245, we are more than happy as this is still 50PS more than the last one which arrived on our shores. Mated to this engine will be a 6-speed DSG for super slick shifts, taking the sedan to triple-digit speeds in 6.7 seconds and all the way to a top speed of 250kmph. With these figures, your right foot will have the power to shame cars from a segment beyond, like the Merc C-Class, Beemer 3-Series, Audi A4, Jag XE and the Volvo S60 T6. The standard Octavia carries three engine options: 150PS/250Nm 1.4 TSi petrol, 180PS/250Nm 1.8 TSi petrol, and 2.0-litre 140PS/320Nm diesel.

To differentiate itself from the boring and mundane standard Octavia, the RS will wear certain sporty elements. To start with, the car gets a set of bumpers, rear diffuser, dual stainless steel exhaust tips, a boot-mounted spoiler, 17-inch sporty alloys and the ‘vRS’ badge on the grille and boot. Inside too, there are some neat tweaks. You get all-black interiors with red contrast stitching, a possible option of Alcantara leather, and ‘RS’ insignia on the seats and on the gear knob. Other features are expected to remain similar to the top-end Octavia.

There is no direct rival to the Octavia in the country but price wise, it will stand against the Volkswagen GTI and the Volvo V40.
