Pininfarina has made a series of impressive announcements. For starters, the new automaker has set up its headquarters in Munich. The company, under the leadership of Mahindra, plans to procure cutting-edge electric powertrains to power its upcoming PF0 electric hypercar from Rimac, while putting its experience in the Formula E racing series to good use in developing it.

The carmaker has announced that Rimac will be providing hardware, battery and drivetrain expertise for the development of the PF0. On the occasion of the announcement, Mate Rimac, founder and CEO of Rimac Automobili, said, “We are very excited about this opportunity. Combining Rimac values – technology, innovation and performance with the heritage, history and Italian design of Automobili Pininfarina makes a perfect synergy for an exciting new hypercar – the PF0. This partnership is a big milestone for both companies and we are looking forward to bringing this incredible machine to life together.”

Pininfarina has also hired Christian Jung as its chief technical officer. In the past, Jung has worked with BMW and also served as the director for E-Mobility Systems at Porsche AG. His most recent stint was being the senior director of electrical engineering platform strategy at Faraday Future.

The announcements don’t end there. The company also announced the appointment of former F1 and current Mahindra Formula E driver Nick Heidfeld as the development driver for the upcoming hypercar.

The PF0 will be an exclusive piece of engineering and will have a limited production run of just 150 units. The car will be launched at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, with production set to begin in 2020. The car will be made entirely out of carbon-fibre. The electric powertrain will reportedly produce 1900PS of max power and 2300Nm of torque which seems enough to kickstart a dying star. According to the carmaker, the PF0 will be able to dash to 100kmph in under two seconds and will ‘break’ the 400kmph top speed barrier. Range at full charge is expected to be close to 500km.

On paper, Pininfarina’s maiden production outing seems like it will announce the arrival of the design house as a serious carmaker. Whatever the case may be, one thing is certain - the PF0 will surely be a sight to behold. The long wait for Geneva 2019 begins.
