The range of luxury sedans is getting younger, sportier and smaller in India. First came the Audi A3 and next month, Mercedes-Benz will launch the CLA sedan on January 22. The CLA will mark the three pointed star’s first launch of 2015 following up on a slew of successful introductions in 2014 that has helped it climb up the sales charts and challenge Audi for the top slot.
Mercedes has already launched the CLA45 AMG earlier this year, surprisingly introducing the more powerful performance oriented variant before the mainstream CLA. But this could build up a lot of enthusiasm in the upcoming sedan. The CLA-class shares the same underpinning as the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, B-Class and the recently launched GLA-Class. Unlike the A-, B- and C-Class which were initially launched with just a petrol engine, the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class will be offered with both petrol and diesel engines right from the beginning.
The petrol CLA-Class will be powered by a 2.0-litre engine making 183.5PS of peak power and 300Nm of peak torque. The diesel engine powering the Mercedes-Benz CLA will be a new 2.2-litre oil-burner, capable of 136PS of peak power and 300Nm of peak torque. Both the petrol and diesel engines will be mated to Mercedes-Benz’s tried and tested 7G-DCT automatic transmission with a dual clutch setup. Expect prices to be in the range of Rs 30-35 lakh.
