Hyundai Discontinues i10 In India

The South Korean carmaker looks to focus more on premium products, a strategy that necessitated the discontinuation of the i10

India's second largest carmaker, Hyundai India has discontinued the i10 (not the Grand i10) hatchback in India. The car was introduced first in 2007 and was discontinued due to the South Korean manufacturer's focus shifting to more premium products. The i10 is one of the cars that helped cement Hyundai's position in India as one of the leading car manufacturers.

In case you are wondering whether the news is true or not, a company official confirmed to PTI that i10 has indeed been phased out. Since the introduction of the Grand i10, many had been wondering why the i10 was still on sale. But despite being almost  Continuous demand kept on pouring in for the car from various quarters, which included fleet operators. Hence, till date, Hyundai India has sold close to 1.7 million units of the car both in domestic and export markets.

Hyundai India plans to bring a total of eight products to India between 2017 and 2020. These will include three completely new models while the rest will be the newer versions of the existing cars on sale. With the masses warming up to hybrids in India, expect Hyundai to make a move in this sector in near future.

Exploration of alternative fuel technologies and hybrids are big on Hyundai's agenda. However, where India stands on that spectrum is yet unkown. Perhaps Hyundai could relook its hybrid strategy for India as it can benefit from the government's FAME scheme. But only time will tell what direction Hyundai plans to take with respect to the Indian market.
