Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala matched his best qualifying of the season with sixth at round nine of the FIA Formula 2 Championship at Mugello. On the other side of the garage, fellow Red Bull junior driver Yuki Tsunoda lines up 11th for the feature race.
Practice times were a bit misleading as Daruvala was just 19th while Tsunoda was 4th. But everything changed once the 30-minute qualifying session commenced. The first half of the session saw Daruvala in 9th, with Tsunoda in 6th. But the margins were super close up and down the field with the top 18 covered by one second.
As the final few runs of an uber competitive qualifying session commenced, Daruvala and Tsunoda improved on their lap times which resulted in Daruvala lining up 6th and Tsunoda 11th in the end. In the end the Indian driver was only three tenths off a maiden pole position.
This puts Jehan Daruvala in another strong position for the 33 lap (60 minutes) feature race. A top 8 finish will further strengthen Daruvala’s chances for the sprint race on Sunday due to the top eight finishers from the feature race lining up in a reversed order for the sprint race.
The feature race commences on Saturday at 8:15pm (IST) and will be streamed live on the official F1 YouTube channel.
