Jaguar Land Rover, in partnership with Chery, has revealed the Freelander 8, the first production model under the newly revived Freelander brand. Building on Concept 97, the Freelander 8 marks the beginning of a new lineup of electrified SUVs, with a total of 6 models planned over the next 5 years.

If you’re wondering what this new-age Freelander is all about, here’s everything you need to know:

Variants

The Freelander 8 will be offered with multiple electrified powertrain options:

  • Fully electric (EV)

  • Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)

  • Range-extender hybrid (REEV)

It is built on a flexible new platform that supports all three powertrain types.

Design

The Freelander 8 carries forward key design cues from the Concept 97 while adding production-ready elements. Up front, it features a more detailed fascia with rectangular elements and air vents, replacing the concept's blanked-off look. The ‘Freelander’ lettering is prominently displayed instead of a traditional badge.

From the side, the SUV retains its boxy stance with strong character lines and large alloy wheels, along with a distinctive triangular rear glass motif inspired by the original Freelander.

At the rear, the upright design continues with clean surfacing and prominent branding, reinforcing its rugged yet modern SUV identity.

Interior

While full interior details are yet to be revealed, the Freelander 8 is expected to offer a highly tech-focused cabin.

A key highlight is a windscreen-length Mini LED display integrated into the dashboard, capable of showing navigation, vehicle data and real-time information.

The SUV is also expected to feature:

  • Higher front seats with a commanding throne-like driving position

  • “Zero-gravity” second-row seats with high recline angles

  • Likely 6-seat configuration for enhanced comfort

Features

The Freelander 8 is expected to come loaded with advanced tech, including a Huawei-powered ADAS suite supported by a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 chip for onboard systems, a multi-terrain management system, along with advanced connectivity features with real-time data integration. These features position it as a tech-forward offering in the premium SUV space.

Safety

Safety tech will be handled by an advanced ADAS suite developed with Huawei, supported by a roof-mounted LiDAR system for enhanced driver assistance and autonomous capabilities.

Platform & Powertrain

The Freelander 8 is underpinned by a new dedicated architecture designed for electrified vehicles.

  • Supports EV, PHEV and range-extender hybrid setups

  • Electric versions are expected to use an 800V architecture

  • Likely to support fast charging and high efficiency

Detailed specifications are yet to be revealed.

Launch Timeline

The Freelander 8 is expected to launch in China in the second half of 2026, with a global rollout planned at a later stage.

Rivals

The Freelander 8 will compete with large electrified SUVs such as the Li Auto L9, Aito M9 and Nio ES8 in the Chinese market, where it is set to launch first.

ZigSays…

The Freelander 8 marks a major strategic shift for JLR and Chery, as the Freelander name evolves from a single model into a standalone brand focused entirely on electrified vehicles, similar to the Defender in the JLR portfolio.

By positioning Freelander separately from its core luxury lineup, JLR can target a broader, more mainstream EV audience, especially in China, the world’s largest EV market. This also allows the brand to compete more directly with fast-growing local EV players, while leveraging Chery’s manufacturing scale. In the long run, the Freelander lineup could play a crucial role in expanding JLR’s global EV footprint beyond its traditional luxury segments.

While an India launch is yet to be confirmed, the Freelander lineup could eventually help JLR strengthen its presence in India’s growing premium EV SUV space if introduced here.
