Sunfuel’s chargers will offer speeds of up to 120kW, enough to juice up most EVs within an hour

Sunfuel Electric has launched a new “ExpressMiles” highway charging service for electric vehicles (EVs) in India. The first of these chargers will be installed on the Kalka-Shimla highway next month, and it’ll offer charging speeds of up to 120kW. It’ll be capable of charging a wide range of electric car models at the optimum manufacturer-specified charging rate within the shortest possible time.

How quickly can you charge an electric car from Sunfuel’s charger?

The amount of time it takes to charge an EV depends on the vehicle’s power management system voltage. The car’s manufacturer sets the limit on the maximum allowed charging rate based on the battery’s chemistry and its expected service life. Nevertheless, most carmakers aim for charging times within 1-2 hours (for charging to 80 percent) at the maximum DC fast charging rate.

Here’s a handy table for fast charging rates and charging times of common electric cars in India:

Electric Car Model

Maximum DC charging rate

0-80 percent charging time with Sunfuel’s charger

Tata Tigor EV

25kW

1 hour 5 minutes

Tata Nexon EV Max

50kW

56 minutes

MG ZS EV

Hyundai Kona Electric

Jaguar I-Pace

100kW

What’s the benefit of a highway EV charger?

Despite advancements in EV and battery technologies, most electric vehicles are ideal for city use by their range. If DC chargers become more common on Indian highways, you’d be able to travel longer distances in an EV, possibly even take zero-emissions road trips!

There’s still some time before electric vehicle infrastructure catches up to the demand for fast charging stations in India. For now, Sunfuel is planning to set up a mere 70 chargers across the country. We expect that the growing demand for EVs, coupled with the widespread usage of public charging stations, will encourage Sunfuel and other EV charging companies to install more such high-speed chargers in the country.
