2011 was a lukewarm year for motorcycles in India, with only three legitimate all-new motorcycles making it into the mainstream. While there was a sprightly fight in the higher price range Superbikes with a full-throated entry of the 600cc machines, the affordable motorcycles which operate in the critical mindspace for masses and manufacturers were few and far between.
Consequently, three of our four segment winning motorcycles went through to the final round of judging for the 2011 Bike of the Year without facing any competition in their respective categories, the fight at the top was still a tough one. The outstanding four way had the power-to-the-people Bajaj Boxer BM150 in one corner, the fantastic and refreshing Hero Impulse on-offroader in the other, the grunty and comfy Honda CBR250R sport-tourer in the third and finally the big-on-value Hyosung GT650N naked hooligan in the fourth. Enough to have some good, clean fun!
Bike of the year up to 250cc
Honda CBR250R
The Honda CBR250R raises the bar in many aspects with regards to affordable performance motorcycling for the masses complimented by the right safety features. It’s the sort of bike that performance nuts in India had been waiting for, and was amongst the favourites of the jury.
Superbike of the year
Hyosung GT650N
Practicality and performance clubbed together for the street are what make naked bikes so much more fun and enjoyable to a larger audience. And these qualities, along with the down-to-earth pricing, got the Hyosung GT650N through its own starry class.
Power commuter of the year
Bajaj Boxer BM150
Practical and functional, quite like its design, engine and character, the Bajaj Boxer 150 has everything going for it that will help in establishing it as a brand. It’s a great step up for the commuter who needs a little more grunt for his daily tasks and the jury thought so as well.
SEGMENT RIVALS
Superbike of the year
Hyosung GT650R
A wonderful 650cc V-twin supersports available at a fairly affordable price, but its extreme posture took some points away.
Hyosung ST7
A relaxed, comfortable cruisin' machine, with great presence. Build quality and its relatively higher price kept it from topping its class.
