BSA Gold Star Overview

The BSA Gold Star has been launched in India starting at Rs 2,99,990 (ex-showroom), making it more than Rs 3,000 cheaper than the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. The deliveries of the retro roadster have also commenced. Check out the details here.

The British brand BSA has entered the Indian market once again and the Gold Star is the first and only bike in their current line-up. It has a retro-roadster design and is powered by a 652cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine.

With the launch of the Gold Star 650, the iconic British brand, BSA is back in India. The Gold Star is a retro-styled bike that doesn’t boast of excessive features. It is the largest capacity single-cylinder bike in India that’s manufactured in India.

BSA Gold Star Key Highlights

Price: The BSA Gold Star 650 is priced from Rs 2,99,990 to Rs 3,34,990 (ex-showroom, Delhi), depending on the colour you choose; it has six colourways to choose from. There are no other differences between them. Highland Green and Insignia Red are priced at Rs 2,99,990, Midnight Black and Dawn Silver at Rs 3,11,990, Shadow Black at Rs 3,15,990, and the Legacy Edition - Sheen Silver is the most expensive at Rs 3,34,990.

Features: The BSA Gold Star offers only utilitarian features, and does not go overboard with them. It has an analogue twin-pod instrument cluster with a speedometer on one and a tachometer on the other. Both the pods have digital insets - the left one has an odometer, and the right one for the fuel gauge. There’s a smaller tell-tale indicator pod between the two primary ones. It also gets a side-stand sensor, an anti-theft system and a USB charging port. No Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity, navigation, and other tech, which keeps the bike rather true to its retro-nature.

Engine: In the first of its kind, the BSA Gold Star is powered by a 652cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, with dual spark plugs. It makes 45.6PS at 6000rpm, and 55Nm at a rather low 4000rpm. BSA claims that the beauty of this engine is that it makes 60 percent of its peak torque from as low as 1800rpm. It’s mated to a 5-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch.

Suspension, Brakes & Other Details: The BSA Gold Star has a 41mm conventional telescopic fork and twin shock absorbers with 5-step preload adjustability. It has an 18-inch spoked front wheel and a 17-inch rear, both aluminium rims, made by Excel (a European performance wheel brand). It runs on Pirelli Phantom Sportscomp tyres. Its braking setup includes a 320mm disc at the front and a 255mm disc at the rear, both with Brembo calipers; dual-channel ABS is standard. The BSA Gold Star has a kerb weight of 201kg, which is heavy, but much lighter than the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. The other specs on the Gold Star include a 12-litre fuel tank, and a 780mm seat height.

Rivals: Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 is the primary rival to the BSA Gold Star, although the Royal Enfield has a slightly higher starting price. The Kawasaki Z650 RS is also in the same category as the Gold Star, however it is priced much higher.

Could buying the BSA Gold Star now be the better choice, than waiting for the Royal Enfield Classic 650?
