Vespa SXL 150 Expert Review

The Vespa SXL 150 is one of the five offerings from the Italian brand in the 150cc segment. It gets a stylish design language with a distinctive square headlight. But is it able to deliver with a premium price tag? Let’s take a look:

Design

The Vespa’s square headlight with the chrome surround syncs well with the chrome mirrors and brake levers. It gets 5-spoke alloy wheels. Overall, the design is nearly identical to the rest of the scooters in the Vespa range, and the classic styling of the brand makes it really elegant.

Engine, Performance and Mileage

The Vespa SXL 150 gets a 150cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine that makes 10.79PS at 7100rpm and 11.26Nm at 5300rpm.

The 150cc engine offers peppy acceleration but it is not very fast. The difference in power compared to its 125cc sibling is not very much, and it can be felt in the performance as well. Vibrations are quite less and feels very comfortable in the city, though the engine gets noisy at higher speeds. 

Handling and Ride Quality

The SXL 150 gets the same underpinnings as the rest of the Vespa models, meaning it gets a monocoque steel chassis giving it good riding dynamics. The scooter feels light and agile making it very easy to cut through traffic. 

The front disc brake’s overall performance could have been better, as the bite can be felt only when applied harder. The scooter remains quite stable under heavy braking, thanks to the trailing link-type front suspension that’s designed for this purpose.

Comfort

The Vespa SXL 150 is equipped with a single side link-type front suspension and a hydraulic monoshock at the rear. The setup is quite firm and the ride quality is not that comfortable over broken patches. The tyres provide good grip but a telescopic fork would have made the experience better. But then again, it would’ve taken away from the Vespa’s retro charm.

Features

The semi-digital instrument console is neatly laid out with the digital display for the fuel gauge and odometer. The speedometer has an analogue display. The quality of the switchgear could have been better for a premium scooter like this. The USB charging port and the sufficient underseat storage space offer good practicality. It doesn’t get smartphone connectivity, which is disappointing for a 150cc premium scooter.

Should You Buy The Vespa SXL 150?

The Vespa SXL 150 is a sporty and stylish retro 150cc scooter with good acceleration and agile handling. But considering its premium price tag of Rs 1,50,554 (ex-showroom), it needs more features, a more comfortable ride, better performance, and better switchgear quality.

Excellent handling and style

This scooter has excellent acceleration, gorgeous styling, and excellent handling. It also has good underseat storage although there is room for improvement with the engine, it feels very comfortable in the city. The engine is noisy even at high speeds, but it provides excellent driving dynamics. The Vespa SXL 150 is a very stable scooter even though it has a lot of contemporary features. Even with the strong acceleration, the ride quality could be enhanced because of the subpar switchgear and the vehicle ease of handling.

Not satisfied with vespa

I didn't like Vespa SXL 150 too much because of its old design and rough performance. as always the pricing is high and not reasonoable as per the features and build quality. it gives mileage of 45kmpl and maintenance cost is moderate. if you need a scooter for daily usage then TVS Jupiter is better than vespa models. I didn't felt comfortable while riding because of it's hard suspension.

Good pickup but stiff ride

I have this scooter in matte red colour with 2017 model and it has great pickup with solid build quality but the performance is better in Aprilia SR 160. The handling of this scooter is very good and got mileage around 40 kmpl but modern features are not included. It looks premium on the road and get classic design but brakes are not good and ride quality is stiff.

more defined, much better

Well known for its functionalities, the Vespa SXL 150 is a dynamic model. I recently bought this bike and my driving experience has been amazing. The drive quality is swift and smooth. The range of the bike is offered at an affordable price. Unique features that make this model stand apart include comfortable seat, especially for the driver. The only con is that it feels a bit heavy at times. Rest, according to me the maintenance does not cost a lot.
