Renault India To Discontinue Diesel Models Post April 2020

Renault will become the second manufacturer in the country to stop selling diesel models from its portfolio after Maruti Suzuki

Renault has a sole diesel engine in India - the 1.5-litre K9K engine.
Renault’s diesel models in India include the Captur, Duster and the Lodgy.
Duster and Captur will continue to be on sale as there’s a petrol engine on offer.
The future of the Lodgy MPV is yet to be known as it’s a diesel-only model.
The French carmaker has plans to launch EVs here by mid-2022.

Renault India has hinted that it will stop selling diesel cars post the implementation of BS6 emission norms in April 2020. This will make Renault the second manufacturer to discontinue diesel models after Maruti Suzuki. Renault has only one diesel engine in its portfolio - the 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine that’s available in two states of tune -- 85PS and 110PS.

The 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine is found under the hood of the Duster, Captur and the Lodgy. While the Duster and Captur will continue to be on sale post the implementation of BS6 emission norms as they are available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine as well, the status of the Lodgy is yet to be known as it’s a diesel-only model. The 1.5-litre petrol engine produces 106PS of power and 142Nm of torque in both the models. Other models in the carmaker’s portfolio include petrol-only models like the Kwid hatchback and the upcoming Triber MPV. The Kwid gets a 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre petrol engine while the Triber gets a brand new 1.0-litre unit.

Post the discontinuation of its diesel models, Renault has plans to bring EVs here by 2022. Thierry Bolloré, the global CEO of the French carmaker, has reportedly said that "EVs are part of the mid-term plan for 2022 and the company will look at local manufacturing of the same in India.” He also added that carmaker is open for partnerships to jointly manufacture EVs in the country.

Renault and Maruti have decided to discontinue their diesel models as they have predicted the demand for such cars to nosedive once the new norms are implemented. The main reason is due to the high costs of upgrading diesel engines to meet BS6-emission norms, which will eventually drive up the prices.

Meanwhile, carmakers like Ford, Mahindra, Honda and Hyundai have decided to retain diesel models post April 2020.
