It was only recently that KTM dropped the 690 Enduro R and the 690 SMC R from its European catalogue. The rumours initially suggested that it was done to avoid direct competition with its sister company, Husqvarna's, 701 Enduro and 701 Supermoto motorcycles. However, the reality is that the engine on the 690 was falling short on complying with the more stringent Euro 4 norms. Now, the recently spied images suggest that the Austrian giant is all set to bring the two motorcycles back to life.
Going by the pictures, KTM has thoroughly worked on the design elements of the two models, cutting off the extra muscle. The slimmed down front end will allow riders to have more control over the bikes, helping the rider move closer to the front. The seat is also redesigned and is expected to offer more comfort.
A closer look suggests that the Enduro R now sports a different suspension setup. It seems to be running on WP Xplor 48 front forks, which has 300mm of travel compared to the older model's 250mm. On the other hand, the suspension on the SMC R appears to be unchanged.
According to reports, both the motorcycles might receive the same engine that powers the 2016 KTM 690 Duke. This 693cc, single-cylinder engine produces 74PS of power at 8500rpm and 73.86Nm of torque at 6500rpm. Of course, some additional tuning is expected considering the new norms the Enduro R and SMC R models need to adhere to. To get them through Euro 4 norms, KTM has fitted the two motorcycles with large exhaust cans containing catalytic converters.
KTM will most likely unveil both the new bikes at the 2018 EICMA Show in November, along with the 790 Adventure. All three motorcycles are expected to go on sale in 2019.
