The Xtreme 200R, sold as the Hunk 200R in Europe, is now Euro5-ready

  • Hero sells the Hunk 200R in international markets like Turkey.
  • The Euro 5-ready version is fuel-injected.
  • Hero sells its Glamour as the Ignitor 125 in Turkey, will now get i3S technology.

  • While Hero MotoCorp will be giving the Auto Expo a miss next year, it has given us a teaser of what to expect from it at EICMA. The brand has given us a glimpse of two of its models in Euro5-ready form ahead of their official unveil at the show in a few days’ time. The models in question are the Hunk 200R, which is essentially a rebadged Xtreme 200R, and the Glamour, which is sold as the Ignitor 125 in international markets.

While the India-spec Xtreme 200R is carburetted, the Euro5-ready Hunk 200R has had to employ fuel injection in order to meet the latest emission norms. The Ignitor, meanwhile, gets Hero’s i3S stop-start technology but interestingly misses out on fuel injection, getting a carburettor instead. This adds up, since Hero has not equipped any of its fuel-injected models with the i3S technology yet.

There are a few reasons for this: firstly, the stop start technology would have to be much more sophisticated in order to work with a fuel injection system, with the fuel pump requiring priming before the engine is turned on each time, also sapping charge from the battery. Also, in a price-sensitive segment such as this, having i3S as well as fuel injection would have driven up the costs substantially.

To further help its bikes meet emission norms, Hero has equipped these models with a three-way catalytic converter. At present, the Euro 4-spec carburetted Hunk 200R puts out 18.4PS and 17.1Nm, which is very similar to what the Xtreme 200R churns out in India. We can expect the fuel injected version to produce similar figures as well.

The Ignitor 125, meanwhile, produces 11.86PS, which is 0.17PS more than the India-spec FI version. Since Euro5 emission norms are very close to the BS6 norms that are coming into effect in India next year, we can expect these changes to translate into Hero’s lineup here as well. Stay tuned for more updates.
