Dealers have been asked to hold deliveries until the problem is fixed

  • Cars already delivered to customers are being recalled.
  • Rubber beading in the window is likely to be the issue.
  • Honda could bring the City to India in mid-2020.

According to a new report, the first 2020 Honda City sedans have been recalled in Thailand. Dealerships have been asked to postpone deliveries. Faulty window seals and rubber beadings are suspected to be the cause, and will likely be quickly replaced or repaired by the company.

The City was launched in Thailand on November 25, 2019. The cars affected by the recall are likely the first batch of Citys to come out of Honda’s Ayutthaya province plant. It must be noted that the 2020 Honda City is based on an all-new platform and does not borrow sheet metal from its predecessor. This shows that even established carmakers are not immune to small errors.

The cause of the insulation problem was not disclosed and could be a manufacturing or assembly issue. Honda has not given an official statement on the timeline to fix the problem. Considering that these are the first of the all-new Citys, Honda is likely to be prompt in making amends.

Ironically, Honda had coincidentally given out gifts worth THB 6,490 (Rs 15,000) to the first buyers of the City. At launch, Honda had said, “customers who reserve an all-new Honda City between 25 November and 31 December, 2019, and take delivery of the car within 31 January, 2020, will receive a Fitbit Smart Tracker Charge 3 in a graphite/black color.”

The new City is expected to arrive in India by mid-2020. While the Thai-spec model has a 1.0-litre turbo petrol, a 1.5-litre BS6 petrol is likely to power the India-spec City. The upcoming car is larger in every dimension than its predecessor. It is likely to be priced higher than the current generation’s Rs 9.91 lakh to Rs 4.31 lakh. Once launched, the City will stir up rivalries with the upcoming Hyundai Verna and the Toyota Yaris.
