2016 Auto Expo: Maruti unveils the Concept Baleno RS

Powered by a 1.0 BOOSTERJET direct injection turbo engine, the Concept Baleno RS is a sporty version of Maruti Suzuki’s hatchback that will go on sale through the company’s premium NEXA showrooms.

According to its makers, the Concept Baleno RS will give customers the opportunity to experience the delight of a performance car with the luxury of a premium hatchback. The 1.0L BOOSTERJET direct injection turbo engine in the RS is claimed to deliver performance “far above its weight - and displacement - to deliver amazing power, torque and road speed.” The Baleno RS develops power of 110 horses and makes an impressive 170Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 5-speed gearbox.

Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited said, “Concept Ignis and Concept Baleno RS are our two new offerings for India. These will appeal to the third generation Maruti Suzuki customers. The production models of both models will be launched in theNEXA channel and will reinforce our commitment towards constantly introducing aspirational cars that offer a new premium experience to our customers. Using latest and innovative technologies, we aim to meet the design and performance criteria of customers who are seeking vehicles that are friendly to environment and society.”

The Baleno RS will go sale in the Indian market during the festive season later this year along with the Ignis. Expect the Baleno RS to be priced at a marginal premium over the standard hatchback. The Baleno RS will compete against the likes of the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and the Fiat Punto Abarth.
