The iconic SL nameplate is making a comeback in India after a 12 year hiatus in the form of its seventh generational avatar

The SL nameplate is being brought back to India after a 12 year break on June 22. We will be getting the AMG SL 55 4MATIC+ variant, which is the middle child of the seventh-gen SL range and here’s everything you need to know about it:

Design

The 7th gen Mercedes SL roadster’s silhouette is made up of smooth flowing lines all around. Even though the design is striking, it is rather easy on the eyes at the same time, and that is because of the mingling of smooth surfaces with the sharp LED head- and tailights.

In profile, the front end of the car looks rather exaggerated and long in comparison to the stubby-looking rear end. The sleek triangular-shaped tailights sit on the curvaceous rear end and the quad exhaust pipes integrated onto a diffuser-like bumper element is the only bit breaking the coherent flow of lines at the rear.

Cabin

The cabin is typical Mercedes - a single vertical screen makes up the central console, turbine inspired aircon vents all around and the three-spoke chunky AMG-spec steering wheel at the helm of it all. You also get a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display behind the steering wheel and a heads-up display as well. All of these elements come along to give the cabin a proper upmarket feel.

Underneath the bonnet of the SL 55 rests a 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 engine. When ignited to life, it produces 476PS and 700Nm at its zenith, which helps it go from a standstill to 100kmph in just 3.9 seconds. Power is sent to all four wheels via the 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system and it’ll do speeds of up to 295kmph, if you’re brave enough do try it out that is. There is an even more powerful SL 63 trim, and you can read all about it here.

In addition to the potent powertrain, Mercedes has equipped the SL with rear wheel steering as standard to make it more stable around corners and help reduce the turning circle at lower speeds.

The Mercedes-AMG SL 55 will slot in between the E-Class AMG and the GT 63 S E Performance in the carmaker’s Indian lineup. The open-top roadster will rival the likes of the lower variants of the Porsche 911 Cabriolet when it goes on sale on June 22.
