Quick Highlights

  • The battery pack will be a structural component and comprise new Bharat Cells

  • The battery pack also houses the integrated control module

  • This is a scalable platform that can be used on different e-scooters

Ola Electric has showcased the gen 3 platform which will underpin the upcoming iteration of the S1 electric scooters. The platform comprises 3 major components – battery pack, motor, and the integrated control modules.

Gen 3 Battery

The battery pack will be a structural component, and will be connected to the front and rear subframes of the electric scooter. It’s claimed to have improved shock resistance, strength, and thermal efficiency. The battery pack will use Ola’s new made-in-India 4680 Bharat Cell (4680 refers to individual cell’s 46mm diameter and 80mm height). Ola claims these new cells are more energy dense than the 2170 cells that are used currently. These are also claimed to be completely indigenously developed cells.

On that note, as per Indian Council of World Affairs, India imports most of the lithium required in the country, and a major chunk of it comes from Hong Kong and China.

Gen 3 Motor

Ola says the motor used in the Gen 3 platform will use magnetised electrical coils, instead of permanent magnets that are most commonly used today.

According to the brand, it will increase the performance as well as thermal efficiency of the motor. Also, the MCU (motor control unit) will be integrated into the motor itself. Another claim is that the raw materials for the motor will be domestically sourced, in the interest of being more sustainable.

Gen 3 Control Modules

In the Gen 2, Ola uses multiple control modules for different components. With the Gen 3, the battery management system, some part of the MCU processing, and other electric control units will be integrated onto a single processing chip.

Will be integrated into the battery pack

This integrated control unit will be housed in the battery pack itself, but in a dedicated compartment. Ola says the integrated control module will help them implement features like ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) into their scooters in the future.

Upcoming Ola Electric Scooters

Ola has said the Gen 3 Ola S1 will make its debut sometime around March-April 2025.

Also, while explaining the scalability of the platform, Ola has also given us a sneak peek of other, different electric scooters that they might be working on. Ola claims that the new platform can also form the basis for a sporty e-scooter and a touring-oriented maxi-style e-scooter, apart from the S1 range.
