Jeep’s Upcoming India-SUV Will Have Tata DNA. Sierra Rival Expected?

At its 2026 Investor Day, Stellantis announced that Jeep will launch a new SUV through its joint venture with Tata Motors by 2028. The vehicle will be developed and assembled in India, and then exported to 50 markets worldwide. The bigger talking point is the fact that this new SUV will be underpinned by a Tata platform. Here’s all you need to know. 

Which Platform? Punch, Nexon, Cruvv, Sierra or Harrier? 

While details about which platform the upcoming Jeep SUV will use, we expect it to use the Sierra’s platform: the ARGOS (All-Terrain Ready, Omni-Energy and Geometry Scalable) architecture. Why we believe it to be Jeep's best bet is that ARGOS supports all-wheel drive, which is crucial for Jeep. Also, it allows for electrification, making the upcoming Jeep SUV future-proof. And finally, it sits in the most lucrative segment for SUVs in India, which rivals the Creta, Seltos and Duster. 

While taking an educated guess for the platform is easy, doing the same for the engine options is another story. The Sierra gets 3 engine options, none of which are sourced from Fiat. However, the Harrier and Safari still use the Fiat-sourced 2-litre diesel. Which engine or powertrain will Jeep be more inclined towards? We should find out in due time. 

Why Tata?

The connection already exists. Stellantis already manufactures Fiat engines at Tata's Ranjangaon plant in Maharashtra. The partnership stretches back more than 20 years, since the good old Fiat days. And now, with Tata holding a commendable market share, Jeep’s inclination to deepen this partnership is quite natural. Stellantis gets a new platform that is competitive in the market and an established production line without having to build its own factory. 

This ‘asset-light’ approach is prominently mentioned in Stellantis’ new policy. For Tata, this arrangement green-lights the ARGOS as an export-worthy architecture.

Market Launch and Expectation

Jeep had already announced a new SUV due in 2027 as part of its India 2.0 Strategy. Whether the 2027 and 2028 vehicles are the same product on a revised timeline, or two distinct entries, has not been clarified by Stellantis. However, these are still a bit too far in the future to be influencing decisions today. If you are considering a Jeep, the existing Compass and Meridian are still practical choices that are great fun to drive.
