The AMG GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE ditches the six-cylinder engine to become Mercedes’ first performance-oriented hybrid SUV coupe

  • 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe revealed globally.

  • Available in two trims: GLC 43 4 Matic and 63 S E PERFORMANCE.

  • Top-spec variant gets a 2-litre hybrid powertrain, belting out a combined 680PS and 1020Nm.

  • Styling gets AMG-specific cues for a sharper and sportier silhouette.

  • Cabin benefits from AMG-specific components as well.

  • India launch likely after that of standard GLC Coupe.

Downsizing is omnipresent. Be it a Ferrari, an Audi or a Maruti, no one can escape it. So instead of fighting the trend, the folks at Affalterbach (read: Mercedes-AMG) have embraced it wholeheartedly without compromising on the performance front. The latest example comes in the form of the Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe, which has just been revealed with a four-cylinder engine underneath instead of the six-cylinder engines it had before!

Our prayers are with the 3-litre bi-turbo six-cylinder engine, but the 2-litre four-cylinder engine from AMG C-Class and A-Class shouldn't be taken lightly. It is offered in two variants: 43 4MATIC and 63 S E PERFORMANCE. The former is free of any electrification, while the latter gets an electric motor for assistance, for a combined output of 680PS and 1020Nm!

Apart from its primary function of boosting performance, the hybrid system also offers a pure electric drive but with a range of just 12km. But do note that the electric motor here is for pure performance instead of fuel efficient driving.

Of course with such a potent powertrain, a host of changes have been made underneath the skin to make it equally poised dynamically. Stiffer suspension, active roll bars, rear wheel steering, adaptive adjustable damping, upgraded sports brakes and a speed-sensitive steering… the works! All to make the driving experience all the more involving.

The SUV coupe doesn’t hide the fact that it stores a rocketship of an engine underneath, thanks to the sportier exterior. Changes come in the form of AMG-specific vertical slats for the grille, reworked and more aggressive lower bumper, the flush-fitting wheels which you can spec on up to 21-inch alloys, the AMG-specific side skirting and rear diffuser. The aggressiveness in the bumper is also thanks to quad exhaust tips, two at each side, flanking the prominent diffuser.

Inside, Mercedes has kept the layout identical to the standard GLC Coupe. But you do get the AMG-specific steering wheel, seats, floor mats, sports pedals, and illuminated door sills. The 11.9-inch portrait styled infotainment system takes centre stage, complimented by the 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. Both get AMG-specific graphics and features.

Mercedes has already launched the standard GLC’s SUV version in India, and we reckon the coupe version could make way sometime later. So this AMG-spec model could also be in the pipeline, likely for sometime in 2024. If launched, expect a price tag north of Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom). The Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe would take on the likes of the Porsche Macan.
