Citroen has launched the Basalt SUV-coupe on our shores from Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom), and it is available in three variants and 7 colour options. By now, we know that the Basalt’s USP is its unique styling, and affordable pricing. But, in this article, we will be taking you through the rear seat experience of the SUV to find out if that too is well sorted out and adds to the Basalt’s strengths.
To begin with, the Citroen Basalt gets beige-coloured part-fabric-part-leatherette upholstery which complements well the black-beige theme of the dashboard and door pads. The beige seats look premium and make the cabin feel airy, but they will need extra care and cleaning.
Coming to the space factor, you will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of room on offer, especially when compared to similarly-priced SUVs. The kneeroom and footroom are more than enough, even for six-footers or above. The headroom too is pretty impressive and enough for six-footers, despite having a sloping roofline. And, if you were yet not impressed, the Basalt has a special trick up its sleeve wherein it lets you adjust the underthigh support by moving the base of the rear seat by upto 87 mm.
The Basalt can accommodate up to three average-sized adult passengers in the rear seat, if need be. The window line is not positioned very high, which means you get a good enough view of the outside. Citroen has done most of the things right, but the addition of a sunroof would have surely elevated the experience and made the cabin feel even more airy.

A spacious cabin needs features to make it more comfortable, and the French carmaker has given the SUV all the essentials that you would need on a daily basis. The features include, rear AC vents, two type-A charging ports, a large central armrest with twin cup holders and a phone holder. We only missed rear sunblinds here.
The Basalt is Citroen’s first SUV-coupe for India, and takes certain design cues from other Citroen models like the C3 and C3 Aircross. It is placed in a very competitive and one of the most popular segments in India. However, the Basalt offers a unique coupe design compared to other conventionally styled SUVs, and also gets a decently-equipped cabin for the price it’s offered at. To know more about the Basalt, head over to our story.
The Citroen Basalt retails from Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 13.62 lakh (ex-showroom). The pricing means that it faces competition from subcompact SUVs like the Kia Sonet, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Tata Nexon and also takes on the lower to mid-spec variants of compact SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. It will also rival the upcoming ICE-Tata Curvv, which is set to be launched on September 3, 2024.
