Until recently, the internet was abuzz with rumours of Apple Inc. developing a new electric vehicle. There were even reports of the smartphone maker allegedly joining hands with Hyundai for the EV. However, all that is now water under the bridge, and in what seems like a slight twist of events, Foxconn, Apple’s smartphone assembler, has unveiled not one but three new electric vehicles.

The three new concepts -- a crossover (Model C), a sedan (Model E), and a bus (Model T) -- were showcased at the Hon Hai Tech Day (HHTD21) in Taiwan. They will be sold under the brand name Foxtron. The manufacturer is expected to roll out the EVs in 2023, and it plans to enter South Asian markets in the next five years.
The crossover and the sedan are based on the Hon Hai modular open platform, which supports a range of body styles, electric powertrains, and battery pack combinations.

We start with the Model C. It’s a 4.6-metre crossover with a 135PS electric motor that draws power from a 58KWh battery pack. By the looks of it, the specifications seem on par with the Hyundai Kona Electric and MG ZS EV. There will be a more powerful version with dual electric motors as well.

Now, to the Model E sedan, which gets a dual-motor setup developing a combined 750PS. The 5.1-metre sedan uses a larger 98KWh battery pack for increased range. Thanks to its specs, the Model E is set to be the segment topper, and it will rival the Tesla Model S, Mercedes-Benz EQC, and Audi e-tron GT.
How will Foxconn fend off the competition from other established players? That’s something only time will tell.
