The original policy, which came into effect in August 2020, is set to expire later this year

To boost the sales of EVs and make more people buy them, the Delhi government came up with a policy specifically for EVs where the first 1,000 buyers in the state will be given incentives and help in the adoption of EVs. This policy came into effect in August 2020 and will expire in the same month this year. In order to design the second phase of this policy, the Delhi government has asked the stakeholders for a meeting on May 24.

What This Policy Entailed

With its EV policy, the government started subsidy schemes which gave EV buyers incentives of Rs 10,000 per kWh of their car’s battery capacity. This subsidy had a limit of up to Rs 1.5 lakh and was offered to the first 1,000 electric vehicles registered in the national capital.

After some time, the government started adding other benefits like exemption of road tax and registration fees for the EV. As per the Delhi government, by 2024, it wants 25 per cent of all new vehicles registered in India to be battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

While there are no details regarding what’s going to be in the second phase of Delhi’s EV policy, we can expect that more incentives for EV buyers will be added to boost sales even more. With the incentives that the Delhi government offered, the number of monthly registration of EVs surpassed that of CNG vehicles from June to September 2021, as suggested by some reports.
