The Volkswagen Golf, originally launched in 1974 has always had tuned up, hot versions usually under the GTi moniker. Volkswagen has also in the past though had some crazy one-off prototype Golf models, like the one with the twin-turbo W12 engine and the one with Audi R8 running gear. Those though were never intended for production and thus remain only as concepts. At the 2014 Beijing Auto Show, Volkswagen is all set to launch yet another high powered concept, the Golf R 400.
As the name suggests, the Volkswagen Golf 400 R will have 400PS. Volkswagen claims that the 400 R will be capable of going from 0-100kmph in 3.9 seconds onto a top speed of 280kmph. The Golf R will be powered by a 2.0-litre, four cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine like the one found in the current Golf. Volkswagen has upgraded several components like the turbo, the ECU and several internal bits to reach the magic 400PS target.
The Volkswagen Golf R 400 is only a concept as of now but Vokswagen might put this car into production, making it the most powerful Golf ever produced. The Golf R 400 gets an upgraded exterior, including larger air intakes with carbon fiber inserts. The Golf 400 R also gets flared wheel arches like the 1980’s Golf Rally G60 and a set of larger sportier wheels. The interior too has been upgraded to incorporate race seats and gauges. The Golf R 400, if produced, will come with all-wheel-drive, making it one of the most extreme Volkswagen Golfs ever made.
