Tata's little Tiago is going from strength to strength. The hatch recently breached the one lakh mark in terms of bookings, and Tata claimed that the AMT version received an "overwhelming response". Looks like the manufacturer is keen on cashing in on the response, because it has quietly slid in the AMT for the XT trim of the Tiago. The Tiago XTA costs Rs 4.79 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). That makes it nearly half a lakh cheaper than the top-spec XZA.

The automatic also costs Rs 42,000 over the equivalent manual variant. Save for the lack of a clutch and the gear lever, it is identical to its stick-shift counterpart. There's no change mechanically either, and the Tiago automatic is available with a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that develops 85PS of power and 114Nm of torque. There's no word on claimed fuel efficiency, but we expect it to be quite close to the manual's 23.84kmpl. That said, the Tiago XZA we tested returned 16.04kmpl inside the city, and 22.04kmpl on the highway run. And yes, a detailed review will follow shortly - watch this space.

Back to the car - the XT variant misses out on a few flashy features such as alloy wheels, front fog lamps, ORVM-mounted turn indicators and steering-mounted controls. Sadly, it also misses out on some absolute necessities such as a rear wiper and defogger and anti-lock brakes with EBD. The fine print on the Tiago's brochure says dual airbags are optional only on the manual variant - which is puzzling. While we get some clarity from Tata as to why, as things stand, the Rs 46,500 premium seems well justified for the top-end XZA.
