Under the skin, it will boast AMG's F1-based hybrid powertrain

Have you ever noticed that an AMG-powered variant of a Mercedes model is way more expensive than the top-spec variant of the same car? Well, the reason behind it is simple. AMG is an in-house tuning division for Mercedes-Benz and AMG tuned cars are so powerful that most of them can put sports cars to shame. It is the same division that helps Mercedes-Benz design and develop its Formula 1 car.

On the eve of the 2016 Paris Motor Show, the German automotive manufacturer confirmed that it is working on a hypercar that will use hybrid powertrain technology from its F1 car. Now that is an amazing piece of news, specially if we consider the performance figures that the current hybrid F1 car has. While the team will have to reduce the power slightly to make it less of a handful, Mercedes says it will still pump out more than 1000PS from its 1.6-litre V-6 hybrid. If the German carmaker can pull it off, then, in terms of outright power, the new hypercar will outgun rival hyrbid supercars such as Ferrari’s La Ferrari, Porsche’s 918 Spyder and McLaren’s P1.

The company claims that the new hypercar is about two years away from production and it is likely to be a mid-engine two-seater with carbon fibre body and chassis. Once completed, it will be the most expensive AMG-powered car ever. Opting for a hybrid powertrain also shows the automaker’s commitment to creating electric vehicles for the future. Diamler chief Dieter Zetsche said that further details about the car will be released next year.
