Set up in November 2010, General Motors India’s Talegaon powertrain facility has hit the milestone of rolling out 1,00,000 engines. The plant currently produces the 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre TCDi diesel engines and 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engines.
It is GM’s first plant that manufactures petrol and diesel engines simultaneously. Set up with an investment of $230 million it is one the GM’s 54 facilities that meet the voluntary energy reduction challenge of the US Environmental Protection Agency. The Talegaon facility has cut GM’s energy intensity by 12 per cent in less than two years, keeping 4,419 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
The plant has an annual production capacity of 1,60,000 engines and is designed to cater to the growing demand for car lines and the introduction of new vehicles like the Sail notchback and the Enjoy MPV which are set to be launched in 2013. It has an expansion capacity of another 1,40,000 engines per year.
Lowell Paddock, President & Managing Director, General Motors India, said, “This is a proud moment for us all of us at GM India. Crossing the milestone of producing 1,00,000 engines at the powertrain plant is a testament of our commitment to the Indian market. With the launch of the Chevrolet Sail U-VA and the forthcoming launches of Chevrolet Sail and Chevrolet Enjoy, we will be stepping up the production at the plant. We look forward to achieving more milestones as we go ahead and offer best-in-segment cars in the Indian automobile market.”
