After unveiling the performance-enhanced California at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show in February, Ferrari has named their grand touring sports car as the California 30 with availability of the vehicle across the globe. It is 30 kgs lighter and has 30 more horses under the hood. The V8 engine now churns out an outstanding 497PS of power and a gut-wrenching torque of 505Nm @ 5,000rpm, thanks to new engine mapping and new exhaust manifolds. The torque curve has also been modified and is higher across the engine’s rev range.
Aluminium fabrication techniques and construction technologies used by Scaglietti Centre of Excellence in the manufacture of the California’s chassis have enabled an overall weight reduction of 30 kgs, without impinging on its structural rigidity or performance. The reduction in weight and increase in horsepower have directly benefited the Ferrari California’s performance, reducing its 0-100km/h acceleration time to 3.8 seconds. For those in search of a more dynamic yet still not overtly extreme driving experience, Ferrari has now introduced an optional Handling Speciale package which features modifications to both the car’s running gear and set-up reducing body roll.
The package includes magnetorheological dampers controlled by a faster ECU that reacts in half the time compared to the stock ECU with a patented Ferrari algorithm. The suspension springs are also stiffer without compromising on comfort. A new steering box ensures better handling with 10 percent lower reduction ratio.
