The images leaked so far reveal a macho generation update for Toyota’s premium SUV

  • It gets a boxier profile and a revamped front end that includes a more imposing grille, sleeker headlamps, and new bumper.

  • Earlier spy shots hint at a revised cabin, complemented by a larger touchscreen infotainment system.

  • Expected to feature a single-pane sunroof, new steering wheel, and connected car tech.

  • Reports suggest V8 engine likely to be replaced by a V6 motor, with a hybrid powertrain possibly joining the lineup at a later stage.

  • Rivals the Lexus LX.

The last we heard of the Toyota Land Cruiser in January 2020 when the premium SUV was discontinued ahead of the BS6 deadline. However, in global markets, the SUV is set to get a generation update, images of which have now surfaced online. From the looks of it, the Land Cruiser will undergo several changes.

At a glance, the full-size SUV has gotten a more muscular design with a boxier stance. If you compare it to the growing segment of smaller crossover SUVs, it does look imposing. The front end is all new, with a large rectangular chrome grille, complemented by sleeker LED headlights and a bold front bumper. Look closer and you’ll notice the window-mounted ORVMs have been repositioned to the front fenders. The rear is pretty simple, retaining the flat tailgate from its predecessor but with a new set of tail lights. Overall, the SUV retains its charm and is sure to turn heads.

We’re yet to get a proper look at the cabin, but previous spy shots hint at a revised dashboard and a large touchscreen infotainment system (possibly 12.3-inches). It is also expected to get a new steering wheel, a single-pane sunroof, connected car tech, and a boatload of safety and driver assists.

Technical details are still under wraps, but we can expect various engine combinations. What’s more, reports suggest the V8 engine option may be replaced by a V6, with a hybrid variant likely to join the lineup in a couple of years.

Toyota is expected to debut the new Land Cruiser later this year. It’s fate in India is unclear since its predecessor had a decade of meagre sales despite its cult following, coupled with an out-of-reach price tag for most Indians, of Rs 1.47 crore (ex-showroom). It’s main rival is the Lexus LX.
