With more than 9 participants opting for a restart, some notable names suffering from a breakdown and an accident, day 2 of the Dakshin Dare rally has made day 1 seem like just the trailer

Day 1 had perfectly set the stage for day 2 of the Maruti Suzuki Dakshin Dare rally and it didn’t disappoint. More than 15 participants, in the Ultimate Cars and Ultimate Bikes classes combined, have withdrawn mostly either due to injury or technical failures. Day 2 was as hair-raising, with the total count of cars that finished being reduced to 23 as compared to the 31 that started.

This leg also included the Super Special Stage that we saw at Dakshin Dare for the first time in last year’s edition. The Super Special Stage is an incredible effort at promoting motorsports in the country. Not only does it test the skills of rallyists on dedicated test tracks, but being in the city’s premises also helps the sport gain popularity among locals.

The Ultimate Cars class saw a shuffling of the top three spots with Suresh Rana gaining some lost ground to finish second in 04:58:13. Samrat Yadav in his Maruti Gypsy held his ground successfully, leading day 2 with a time of 04:55:04. Sandeep Sharma with co-driver Karan Arya finished third consecutively on day 2 with a time of 04:59:50. There are no two ways about the rally getting tougher with each stage. This is especially evident from the fact that three cars couldn’t finish the race. Bani Yadav suffered an engine breakdown while a grey Grand Vitara toppled over.

Commenting on the tough competition, Samrat said, “The competition seems to get tough and edgy with each day. The Super Special Stage is something that adds further challenges where our driving skills are tested on dedicated tracks. We are managing to maintain a very minute difference between other top competitors and us. With another Special Stage in the offing and exploring legs on new terrains, the competition will only toughen.”

The action was equally exciting in the Ultimate Bikes class if not less. T Nataraj clinched the top spot by covering the distance in 03:10:41. Abdul Wahid also upped his game and finished second, moving a spot up, with 03:11:23. Sanjay Kumar, who lost his lead to T Nataraj, now trails at the third position, after finishing leg 1B of the rally in 03:11:30. Bikers endured the challenges better than their counterparts in cars with all of them finishing leg 1B of the rally.

From the majestic windmill-laden landscape of Doddakittadahalli, the rally now heads to Aimangala before moving further to Belgaum. Stay tuned to ZigWheels for daily race reports and do follow us on Instagram for live updates!
