Expert's Opinion on Leoncino 500
- The Benelli Leoncino or Lion Cub, was the brand’s first bike post-WW2, and carries a great legacy. The Leoncino 500 is now the brand’s attempt at keeping that legacy alive in a modern avatar. But how well is the Leoncino able to live up to the name? Here’s what we think
- The Leoncino gets a neo-retro design which has been executed very well
- The special Lion of Pesaro ornament placed on the front fender looks quite premium
- The large 50mm inverted fork at the front gives the bike quite an imposing look
- The fit and finish levels are really good
- The engine is quite refined and has a linear acceleration, which is not very intimidating
- The bike is able to handle highway cruising quite well, sitting at 100kmph at 5,000rpm and 120kmph at 6,000rpm
- The exhaust note is quite good, especially at the higher revs
- Compared to the TRK 502 and its rivals, the engine feels a bit underwhelming and doesn’t rev as freely
- The Leoncino handles quite well in the twisties. It is able to change direction quickly thanks to the wide handlebars which give good leverage
- The Pirelli Angel ST tyres give adequate grip while cornering
- The braking performance is good thanks to the large 320mm front and 260mm rear disc brake setup
- The ABS is a bit too intrusive at slower speeds
- The suspension tuning is well done
- The bike is able to absorb mid-corner bumps with ease
- Short riders won’t find the bike too difficult to ride thanks to the 785mm seat height
- The wide seat can easily accommodate larger riders as well
- The bike offers a relaxed and upright riding posture, which also feels quite commanding thanks to the wide handlebars
- The LCD instrument console looks quite basic, but offers all the essential readouts
- The Benelli Leoncino 500 is quite a good motorcycle and one which we really enjoyed reviewing. The bike is not something which can be put into a box and is better experienced and understood. If you are someone looking for a naked bike with a bit of retro design elements, amazing handling and decent performance, then the Leoncino is a bike worth considering.
