The developer of drive assistance chips and software, Mobileye, parts ways with Tesla. This will happen when the contract between the companies lapses. However, it is still not clear which company took the decision to do so. Tesla now has to find a way within for the production of the autonomous technology.
Mobileye is an Israel-based company that manufactures sensors and the technology behind Tesla’s autonomous software. The company’s 'EyeQ' chip features traffic sign recognition, late departure detection, and more. This chip has a played a huge role in helping Tesla’s autonomous cars hit the road. The Model S sedan and Model X SUV use the third generation of the EyeQ, and might be the last ones to use this technology.
It is believed that Tesla and Mobileye will be Parting Ways because earlier this year the Model S was involved in a crash, resulting in the death of the driver. As per reports, the driver was using the car's autopilot mode when the crash took place – a trailer pulled across the highway and the sensors failed to detect the crash. The autopilot mode is beeing questioned ever since the crash took place.
Mobileye will continue producing chips for other major automobile manufacturers. However, it provides supplies driver assistance and collision prevention technology for Audi, General Motors and Ford. Mobileye recently also joined hands with Intel and BMW to develop the 'iNEXT', which will be BMW’s first fully autonomous car, and which will enter the markets by 2021.
