Royal Enfield has a long history that dates back to the World War days. Their motorcycles were used by Despatch riders who traveled from the headquarters and ground forces, often riding for days. Celebrating its rich heritage, the Chennai based bike maker recently launched its Despatch Rider Classic 500 motorcycle at a price of Rs 2.25 lakh (on-Road Mumbai).
Royal Enfield opened its website to commence bookings of the Despatch Rider Motorcycle on July 15. And within 26 minutes, all of the 200 units of this limited edition offering were sold out. The Royal Enfield Despatch Edition was launched in two colours – Desert Storme Despatch and Squadron Blue Despatch. Each of the 200 units in both these colours have been given a unique camouflage using a special technique of transfer. Aside from the paint job, the RE Despatch Rider motorcycle also come with a special leather seat, a leather strap around the battery casing and blackened out engine and exhaust.
Talking about the engine, the Royal Enfield Despatch series too comes with the same unit that we have already seen on the Classic 500. The single-cylinder air-cooled engine displaces 499cc from which it makes power of 27 horses and torque of 41.3Nm.
Sales for Royal Enfield motorcycles have been on a constant rise this year. The company had already sold over 90,000 units in the first quarter of the year reflecting the demand for the motorcycle brand. And to meet this demand, Royal Enfield recently announced that it will increase the production capacity of its plant in Chennai.
