Founded in 1981, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has grown over the years to become India’s largest carmaker. Every month, a majority of the top ten best-selling cars in the country comes from MSI’s stable. While the company has managed to achieve several milestones since its existence in India, it recently announced that a cumulative exports figure of 15 lakh (1.5 million) vehicles has been achieved. These vehicles have been exported to over 100 countries in Europe, Africa and Latin America.

MSI started its exports from India in 1987-88, with a small number of market-specific cars which were sent to Hungary. Since then, the company’s exports have steadily spread to several countries. Though exports were later bolstered by the iconic Maruti 800 and A-Star, it was the first-gen Zen hatchback that took the company to new markets around the world.

In a press release, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki, Mr Kenichi Ayukawa, said, “We are happy to reach the 1.5 million milestone for our exports. Maruti Suzuki has consistently maintained a presence in international markets, regularly offering new products and reaching out to new countries. Our products like Zen, A-Star, Maruti 800 and Alto have made a mark overseas, including in the most competitive markets of Europe.”

He added, “Our premium hatchback Baleno, made exclusively in India, is the first car to be exported from India to Japan. It has become a symbol of the Make in India mission of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and taken India’s exports story to a new level."

In 2015-16, Alto, Swift, Celerio, Baleno and Ciaz bagged the top five spots in the list of MSI-exported cars to countries such as Sri Lanka, Chile, Philippines, Peru and Bolivia.
