Mahindra Electric Mobility’s CEO, Mahesh Babu, has stated that the company is set to launch three new all-electric ‘performance’ cars by 2019-20. Currently, Mahindra is the only company in India which offers all-electric cars. The current range includes the e2o Plus four-door hatchback, the e-Verito sedan and the e-Supro van.

The new performance cars from Mahindra Electric will benefit from lessons learnt by the company in the Formula E all-electric open-wheel racing championship. Mahindra is the only Indian manufacturer in the relatively new, high-profile racing series. It competes against major car manufacturers like Audi, BMW, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, etc.

To align with the company’s core strengths, the upcoming electric cars from Mahindra will be exclusively SUVs/crossovers. These cars will apparently be able to accelerate from 0-100kmph in 8, 9 and 11 seconds, respectively, as well as hit top speeds of up to 150, 186 and 190kmph, respectively.

Mahindra also claims that these electric cars will have maximum range per charge of 250km, 350km and 300km, respectively, though it has not divulged any concrete information on the said cars’ battery size, electric motor capacity, size or weight.

Mahindra seems to have taken this decision in the wake of the Indian government’s rather surprising announcement to aim for and achieve the goal of only having electric cars plying on our roads by 2030. The infrastructure needed to support such an ecosystem is the biggest challenge manufacturers will face even if they do introduce all-electric cars in the given time period. Mahindra does claim that charging times will be reduced by the time their products are launched here. A lower cost of batteries should also lower the initial cost of ownership. Combine the two and it should attract more customers to such cars.

For now, the only information we have about Mahindra’s new all-electric cars are through announcements by various officials. Details about these cars are expected to be slowly revealed in the coming months.
