The twin-turbo V8 engine that will power the new Lamborghini Urus will not be offered in any of the Raging Bull’s other models.

By now, it is widely known that the forthcoming Lamborghini Urus SUV will be powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, possibly an all-new unit that is currently being developed by Porsche for its own models. Citing CEO Stephan Winkelmann, Autocar now reports that this new engine will not be used in any other Lamborghini models and will be exclusive to the Urus. Apparently, Lamborghini had “discussed” the potential for the V8 to be used in existing cars in its line-up, but it was dismissed because it conflicted with the company’s ‘one car, one engine’ ethos.

To recap, the Lamborghini Huracán and Aventador both use naturally aspirated engines, a V10 and a V12, respectively, and Winkelmann said that will remain the case even as a twin-turbo V8 is use for the Urus.

“On the supersports cars we are convinced that the choices we have made with the naturally aspirated engines are still the right ones,” Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Autocar. “We are not saying that future engines will never beat what we have in our cars; we are saying as long as there is nothing that is better, especially at low revs or in terms of the sound that the V-10 and V-12 have, we stick to them.”

Though Lambo is sticking to natural aspiration for its sports car models, Winkelmann said the third model needs to go in a different direction. “It is clear that for the purpose of the Urus the turbo is the right choice.”

The Lamborghini Urus will enter production in 2018 and will be the first SUV to bear the Raging Bull logo since the ill-fated LM002. The Urus was first shown as a concept car at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show. The production model will be a 2+2 crossover that will likely keep much of the wild styling from the concept. In true Lambo tradition, a SuperVeloce version is also expected to debut shortly after the standard model drops.
