Japanese 'Good Design' Exhibition Held In Delhi

Good design is good business. That is the philosophy behind the recently held Japanese Good Design Exhibition in New Delhi. The three day event proved to be an eye opener in terms of taking design awareness to the next level. Incidentally, India has become increasingly aware of the importance of product design and this exhibition proved to be a catalyst in ushering the way forward.

It wasn't too long ago that the Indian government announced their National Design Policy in order to foster and further innovative design. This was followed by the announcement of the National Design Policy and the India Design Council was set up with a key mandate being to establish a mechanism to recognize and award the Indian industry in creating a brand image for Indian design.  The India Design Mark or I-Mark as it is better known is that very award. 

In order to set up this award system, the India Design Council signed a memorandum of understanding with the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO) in April 2010 and together the two ventures have been working at establishing the I-Mark in India in order to award design excellence across various industries in India.

The Japanese Good Design Exhibition was a showcase of various award winning Japanese designs which included appliances, motorcycles, yachts and cars amongst other machinery. The showcase was an example of what could eventually become an India Good Design Exhibition in the future.

The India Design Council is working aggressively to take this aspect of design excellence forward and through collaborative efforts METI. By applying learnings from Japan to the Indian industry context, the ultimate objective is to build a Brand Design Image that is strictly influenced by Indian design stalwarts.
