Ferrari’s naturally aspirated V-12, that does duty in the GTC4Lusso, is a masterclass in engineering. Producing 680PS of power and 514Nm of torque, it rockets the vehicle from a standstill to 100kmph in 3.4 seconds and helps in achieving a top speed of 334kmph. While all that is brilliant to behold, a V-12 isn’t great at keeping the emissions down. And stringent emission regulations have forced the Italian supercar manufacturer to ditch the V-12s in favour of the less polluting V-8s. That’s the engine configuration Ferrari has chosen for its upcoming GTC4Lusso T model.
Scheduled to debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show, it will be the first-ever 4-seater Ferrari that is powered with a V-8 motor. The twin-turbo, 3.9-litre, 8-pot mill is borrowed from the California T but is tweaked to produce more power. The GTC4Lusso T’s V-8 puts out 602PS of power and 560Nm of torque. Math fans will figure out that it is 78PS lesser power as compared to the V-12 powering the GTC4Lusso but also, 46Nm more of torque.
The AWD (all-wheel drive) system has been ditched for a rear-wheel drive setup in the V-8-powered model and that, Ferrari says, makes the ‘T’ model lighter. The weight shedding will surely keep its off-the-line performance close to that of the GTC4Lusso’s. However, the lack of outright power will surely effect the top speed of the GTC4Lusso T and won’t match that of the V-12 powered car.
Ferrari claims that the GTC4Lusso has been designed for everyday driving with modular torque delivery and a quieter exhaust note at low speeds. The vehicle’s dynamic systems have also been updated with 4-wheel steer and Slide Slip Control for more responsive steering wheel inputs.
No price list has surfaced yet and while we mourn the loss of a V-12 under the hood, we must get ourselves accustomed to such developments by all the supercar manufacturers for their upcoming models.
