The next-generation X1 is being readied by BMW to take on the likes of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class and the 2015 Audi Q3. The new BMW X1 is expected to be unveiled at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The compact crossover undergoes a major transformation and is based on the Munich-based car maker’s new UKL platform which they launched with the Mini last year. BMW will continue to sell the ‘XDrive’ all-wheel drive system.
In the international market, the BMW X1 will come with three engine options – a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit, a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder diesel and a more powerful 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel that will make 170PS. In India though, like the current generation model, it is only the 2.0-litre that will probably be launched.
As far as design is concerned, the 2016 BMW X1 will not be extremely different from the current model. If spy shots were anything to go by, the new X1 will have the same silhouette. That said, it will have some cosmetic changes like the BMW family kidney grille up front, new LED headlights and a redesigned bumper. In profile, it sports new alloy wheels and even has a higher ground clearance. On the inside, thanks to the new platform and the FWD format, there will be a lot more space than before, which will free up more space for passengers at the back too. The dashboard and the steering wheel design will also be different.
BMW will bring the X1 to India via the CKD route and will be launched within six months after deliveries start internationally.
