We all know Ratan Tata as the business icon, visionary industrialist and the great man that he was. But behind all this was a child who was passionate about cars and owned some of the top luxury and sports cars of the world. Over the years, he bought some of the best cars that money could buy, and was also occasionally spotted in some mass market cars which resonated with his humble personality. In this article, we take you through the list of Ratan Tata’s top 10 cars that was part of his garage:
A red Ferrari is always special, and even more when it's a convertible! Ratan Tata owned the Ferrari California in which he was often spotted on the streets of Mumbai, enjoying the lovely supercar and its growling V8 engine in the early hours of the morning. And plenty of folks in Mumbai had even seen the iconic business man take it for a stroll on Sunday mornings.
Ratan Tata owned a Land Rover Freelander that was purchased after successfully acquiring Jaguar Land Rover. Unlike the Ferrari, this was a car in which he used to be chauffeured around more often than actually driving it. The entry-level Land Rover was a comfortable SUV and had a spacious cabin.
Compared to his other cars, the Honda Civic was one of the more humble cars in his garages. Ratan Tata was often seen driving around in this white Civic which he used as his daily driver. Talk about taste considering the Civic was one of the sportiest cars to drive back in the day!
The Indigo Marina had a special place in his heart. It was one of his favorites and was mainly used to take his dogs to the park. He had maintained that car so well that it was showroom fresh even after a couple of years. He even made some modifications to it where he removed the back seat of the car and put a mattress there for his dogs to comfortably travel in the car.
Another convertible on the list is the Mercedes-Benz SL500 in which Ratan Tata was spotted driving around Marine drive, Mumbai. Like most of his sports cars, this too was a left-hand drive car. It came with a powerful V8 engine and its aggressive nature needed careful attention while driving on the busy city roads.
Around the year 2010, Ratan Tata was also spotted a couple of times in the Cadillac XLR. The XLR was a two-seater roadster featuring a hardtop convertible roof and a V8 engine.
Another fancy left-hand drive car in the legend’s iconic collection of cars was the Jaguar F-Type S. It was a soft-top convertible finished in a sporty looking red hue. It was one of the best looking cars in his garage and is one of the most desired sports cars in the world.
An American muscle car with a 2-seater configuration and a convertible structure. The Pontiac Firebird 400 was not used by Tata that often, but was one such American car which he really liked and took great care of (like all of his cars).
An Italian beauty that was a part of Ratan Tata’s garage was the Maserati Quattroporte. Known for its elegant looks, the car is not as attention grabbing as some of his other cars, but was surely one of the more stylish cars in the garage. It was a car that provided the right blend of style, comfort and performance.
While the Nano might have not wooed the Indian buyers as Tata would have wanted, it was still one of the cars that the legend used to love and was also seen driving around town in it. He also used to spend his time in the Nexon subcompact SUV which was used as a daily driver.
Clearly, India’s iconic businessman and industrialist had taste when it came to cars. Which car did you like the most from the list? Let us know in the comments below.
