A 3 cylinder engine is much more fuel-efficient compared to a 4 cylinder engine of the same size. This is because of two primary factors, reduced frictional losses, and lighter weight. Since there is one cylinder less, the frictional losses caused by metal surfaces coming in contact within the engine block is lesser. So if you want more refinement and a quieter car, with a bit more power for equal engine capacity, then a four-cylinder engine is better than a three-cylinder. But if fuel-efficiency and lower purchase cost are your priorities, pick a three-cylinder engine.
